Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. 1 Corinthians 10:12

DANGER! WARNING! CAUTION! BEWARE!

Do these words get your attention? Cause you to be cautious?

Have you ever had a truly indescribable experience? And event transcending your ability to describe it? Perhaps a joy no one else can understand? Or a sight of such beauty, or a despair so deep, that others just can't comprehend? Or a near death experience? You catch your breath, let your heart rate slow to normal, and realize you're still alive. But when you tell your closest friend of your hair-raising experience, it's just Ho Hum; "That's nice. Want more coffee?" He just didn't get it.

Many spiritual experiences-especially missions-are like that. They are intensely personal. Private. Unexplainable. Indescribable. They can be real; life changing; unforgettable-but unsharable.

For those returning from a missions experience, your life is forever changed. You've seen, felt, experienced, and done things that have altered your understanding of God's purpose and your role in it. But beware. Many of your closest friends simply can't relate. Try as you might, you can't make them understand. Appreciate the supporting role of family and friends, but don't expect them to be excited about what they can't understand.

For those who remained behind: realize those returning are coming from the front lines of spiritual warfare; from a tour of duty in Kingdom advancement. Not that you are less important! Front line soldiers can't win without support, and missionaries can't advance the Kingdom without prayer, finances, and encouragement.

But the roles, responsibilities, and experiences are different. Be careful to appreciate what God is doing in you and others-whether on the front lines or in a supportive role. Praise God for your experience; try to understand what He is doing in and through others, and be careful not to judge or belittle others whose experience is different or those who simply can't understand what has taken place in your life.

Dear Jesus, Help me remember that every thing I accomplish is by Your grace; that I can do nothing of myself. Help me to rejoice in the way You bless and use others, even when You lead them to a different experience than I've enjoyed. It is You who call, equip, and lead, and I praise You for Your call on my life, and Your call on the lives of my fellow believers. Amen.
